Engraved title-page (Part I), [6], 24 pp., engraved title-page (Part II), 18 pp. With 100 engraved garden views and plans, numbered 1-100, on 50 leaves of plates, engraved by Henrik de Leth, and one double-page folding map. A splendid work on Netherland landscape architecture at its zenith illustrating a key phase of garden history. This is the definitive visual record of the elaborate gardens of the Maisons de Plaisance in Kennemerlant.
The illustrations include careful delineations of important Dutch manor houses and their gardens, various parterres, fountains, labyrinths, entrance gates and paths. The Leth engravings reflect an increased influence of French and Italian Baroque styles on the Holland landscape during this period. The plates are comprised of perspective views and details of garden designs. Leth's 100 engravings illustrate some forty estates in Kennemerlant, the fashionable country resort north of Haarlem. The Kennemerlant estates are typical of the Dutch Régence style which emerged ca. 1720, in which the natural garden elements superceded the formal. The estates are compact, and the houses are remarkably subordinate to the gardens, which are intimate and self-contained. There are some significant innovations represented herein. For example, the gardens of Waterlant were designed to encompass one great labyrinth, connected by the novel radiating allées. We have assigned the date of publication as "1732" on account of the text at Part II, p. 10, which reads: ".deezen jare 1732.

CASTLE HEEMSTEEDE near Utrecht Holland
Artist Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756) and his brother Christian were printsellers and engravers in Augsburg, Germany during the eighteenth century. Martin Engelbrecht engraved some plates after Rugendas and other masters; his other works included illustrations for Ovid's Metamorphoses, The War of Spanish Succession, Les Architectes Princiers by P. Decker, 92 views of Venice, and a series of prints of workers and their dress, Assemblage Nouveau Des Manouvries Habilles, published at Augsburg, circa 1730. A celebrated engraver of his time, Engelbrecht dominated the print trade in Augsburg. Best known for his portraits of monarchs as well as his intricate landscapes, Engelbrecht's work is beyond compare. Some of his best work was with optical prints. He used these in his perspective boxes and miniature theatres. Typically 8 cards would be inserted into a peepbox, consecutively, which provided imagery similar to that of a theatre scene, or play. The view had great perspective. (The History of the Discovery of Cinematography).
As can be read above MARTIN ENGELBRECHT is an important Engraver as well as a founding father for modern theatre / cinematography.
