IKEBANA (the art of flower arrangement) began as floral offerings to the gods and Buddha in ancient Japan, and was formalized as an art form in the late 15th century.

This type of IKEBANA, which was termed RIKKA, reached its golden age and developed into a complicated style requiring higher techniques at the beginning of the 17th century. Meanwhile a more flexible and natural way of arranging flowers, called NAGEIRE, became popular.
NAGEIRE emphasizes the arranger's feelings and intentions rather than the fixed form. In the 18th century a type of IKEBANA combining characteristics of both RIKKA and NAGEIRE was created by the Misho school.
