This view of Hampton Court Palace depicts the South Front of the Second Principal Court or Inner Court. The Inner Courtyard was surrounded by the more official rooms of the Palace such as the Great Hall. It was also bordered on the east side by the private apartments of Cardinal Wolsey and the suite of rooms for the King and Queen. To the left of this picture can be seen the clock tower which was rebuilt in 1528 by the King’s Master Mason John Molton and named after Anne Bolyn who was then still the King’s mistress. The clock on the tower also dates from 1528 and the first official Keeper of the Clock was John Fitzwater.
Trimmed to plate mark, just enough room to mount, otherwise excellent
Set of 4 sepia Aquatints published 1786 by John Spyers Twickenham and Francis Jukes Rathbone Place London

hamptoncourt2

This view of the West Front of the First Principal Court of Hampton Court Palace shows the magnificent Tudor architecture. The Palace, as its name suggests, was built around a series of courtyards. For three centuries Hampton Court was a favourite Royal residence but the palace had ceased to be used by George III and his family in the later eighteenth century. The oldest part of the palace is the bell hanging in the small tower above Anne Boleyn’s gateway which can be seen in this picture. It was salvaged from a chapel which previously stood on the site of the palace. The community chapel was part of a working farm which was owned by the military order the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem.
Trimmed to plate mark, just enough room to mount, otherwise excellent

View of the East Front of Hampton Court Palace. This picture clearly shows the grand Tudor architecture of Cardinal Wolsey’s great Gatehouse. Hampton Court Palace, as its name suggests was built around a series of courtyards and the main approach was from the west through this imposing gatehouse. The gatehouse led to the Base Court which was surrounded by the grand residential apartments of the Palace. The courtyard is noted for its red brick and stone mullioned windows, elaborate chimney’s and lead capped turrets. This courtyard has been little changed since it was first built.
Trimmed to plate mark, just enough room to mount, otherwise excellent
