MELLAN, CLAUDE (23 May 1598 – 9 March 1688) was a French engraver and painter.
Mellan was born in Abbeville. Among the leading engravers of his time, he is best known for his numerous portraits as well as for his engraving technique of using parallel lines of varying thickness, rather than the more traditional technique of using crossing lines of equal thickness.
He lived in Rome from 1624 until 1636. He died in Paris.
This engraving of the Madonna and child is thought to have been engraved between 1639-1659 and is in excellent condition, see large scan.
