ANTIQUE ENGLISH COPPERPLATE ENGRAVINGS
The "SMITH BROTHERS" painted and engraved English rustic landscapes and Old Master subjects from their own designs during the mid 18th Century.They lived and worked all their lives in Chichester on the south coast of England.
Christoph Weigel the Elder before becoming a renowned Cartographer learnt Landscape engraving during his 15 years as an apprentice Engraver in Southern Germany.

Most of the Smith etchings measure around 5.5 x 4.5 inch copper plate engraving (exquisite Miniature) on laid chain lined published in 1767 in England.. Christoph Weigel engraved landscapes circa 1690 these are a selection of examples and measure on average 22 x 15 cms plate mark on larger paper. |
