Artist. Francesco Primaticcio of Bologna (1504-1570) - French School
Important artist (painter-engraver-sculptor-architect) An Italian Old Master who worked in the heart of the school of Fontainebleau that flourished under King Francois I of France in the 16th century. The school of Fontainebleau was intended by the French king to be a second "Rome" . In Bologna he was influenced by the art of Raphael and pupil of Guilio Roman. The influence of Primaticcio was profound. One of his major works was the Gallery of Ulysses at Fontainebleau. As in most of his work the exact extend of his hand is not fully clear. He did make the designs for the paintings and the work was finished by Nicola dell' Abate between 1541 and 1570. It is known that Rubens painted copies of this series of painting; just to make clear how large the influence of Primaticcio was. The Labours of Ulysses These beautiful Engravings were etched by Theodor Van Thulden circa 1640 are after the Primaticcio/Niccolò dell'Abbate paintings at Fontainebleau and were executed under the tutelage of Rubens..
