These Prints are 300 year old Copperplate Engravings printed on laid paper with chain lines approx. 1.5 inch apart. Etched by Michael Van Der Gucht during the late 1690s and published circa 1702 they are wonderful examples of the 17th century book illustater's art.The texture and "black and white" nature of the engravings are excellent, generally of the finest quality they measure 11 x 17 cms and are generally in very good to excellent condition. Publius Vergilius Maro (also known by the Anglicised forms of his name as Virgil or Vergil) (October 15, 70 BCE – September 21, 19 BCE) was a classical Roman poet, best known for three major works—the Bucolics (or Eclogues), the Georgics and the Aeneid—although several minor poems are also attributed to him. The son of a farmer, Virgil came to be regarded as one of Rome's greatest poets; his Aeneid is Rome's national epic.
